Artist in Residence – Meet Herb Silverman

Born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, Herb Silverman was introduced to the art of painting early in life by his father. His father had a great talent for oil painting and watercolors. Herb learned a lot from his father. Herb’s interest was piqued enough to enroll in four years of art classes at Dickinson High School, where he continued his studies in watercolor and acrylic oils. It became clear that the love for painting was in his blood as he continued to create works of art during his time at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.

Even as a busy husband and father, Herb continued to cultivate his talent for the arts. Just as his father did, he often created greeting cards for friends and family in addition to taking several courses in stone sculpting with his brother. Herb made sure to keep at least one toe dipped in creative pursuits at all times.

Most recently, Herb has been enjoying classes at the University of Georgia in painting and pottery. Like so many before him, he looks to his favorite artists for inspiration.

Some of the works he loves to mimic are by Takasaki, Britto, Obican, Hassam, and many more. Herb’s inherited love for the arts is something that he not only shared with the generations before him but he shares with his grandchildren as well. He and his wife, Helene, moved to Village Park Milton to be closer to their daughter and family—giving them a front-row seat to their grandchildren’s inherited knack for the arts. Some of their favorite works created by their grandkids include a painting of “Starry Night” in addition to many unforgettable theater performances.

Herb has continued his passion for creating and sharing the arts at Village Park Milton. We look forward to exhibiting some of his work throughout our community in the near future. Until then, be sure to visit Herb and Helene for a preview of his colorful and whimsical pieces that the couple has lovingly displayed in their home at Village Park Milton.
